Strengthening Cultural Ties: UAE and Saudi Arabia at ICOM Dubai 2025

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

The 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025) marked a significant milestone for cultural collaboration in the region, where Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum met His Excellency Rakan Al Touq to solidify ties between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. As the first ICOM event held in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, it spotlighted the aspirations both nations share in shaping the future of regional culture.

During the meeting, key advancements in cultural initiatives were discussed, showcasing the flourishing museum ecosystems and heritage preservation projects that both countries have engaged in. Emphasis was placed on fostering national talent within the cultural and creative sectors for enhanced collaboration.

The discussions also centered on creating robust channels for cooperation, from joint projects to sharing knowledge, as well as comprehensive efforts to safeguard both tangible and intangible heritage. A mutual consensus was reached on the vital role culture plays in sustainable development and in embodying national identity.

Sheikha Latifa reiterated the necessity of strengthening UAE-Saudi partnerships to bolster the cultural sector's growth, resilience, and vibrancy. Her comments reflected the overarching theme of ICOM Dubai 2025: the preparation of museums and cultural institutions to adapt to dynamic communities while ensuring accessible and preserved heritage.

This meeting propelled a regional cultural vision wherein the UAE and Saudi Arabia no longer see each other just as neighbors but as allied forces steering a broader cultural renaissance across the Arab world.
