Turkmenistan Advances in Biotechnology Innovation

Post by : Shakul

In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan is amplifying its commitment to biotechnology as experts convene to explore how cutting-edge scientific advancements can bolster the nation's economic progress. The International Scientific and Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences hosted a pivotal conference titled “The Economic Significance of the Integrated Development of Biotechnology in Turkmenistan.”

This event united top scientists, researchers, postgraduate students, and specialists in biotechnology from across Turkmenistan. Attendees examined biotechnology's increasing importance in agriculture, environmental protection, healthcare, industrial sectors, and food security as the nation strides toward modernizing its economy and scientific landscape.

A significant highlight of the conference was the collaboration discussion between Turkmenistan and China, solidified by a Memorandum of Understanding between the AST Technopark and the Institute of Microbiology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Chinese experts Yinwen Bin and Gang Liu showcased their research on innovative biological products derived from salt-tolerant micromycetes aimed at enhancing crop resilience against drought and saline soils.

The scientists elaborated on how the project employs synthetic biology and gene-editing to produce stress-resistant, economical biopreparations. These developments are expected to aid both nations in combating environmental challenges associated with desertification, climate change, and soil degradation while boosting agricultural output in arid regions.

Additionally, researchers from AST Technopark introduced various biotechnology initiatives currently active in Turkmenistan. In ecological domains, they presented specialized biotechnology leveraging native cyanobacteria to stabilize shifting sands in the Garagum Desert, mitigate soil erosion, and enhance soil fertility while encouraging vegetation growth.

In the agricultural sector, innovators developed biological products utilizing halotolerant micromycetes, greatly improving crop germination and resilience in saline soils. The conference also focused on industrial environmental advancements, showcasing bioremediation techniques that utilize specially adapted microorganisms to cleanse oil-contaminated terrains.

The livestock sphere has likewise reaped the benefits of biotechnology studies, with scientists formulating balanced animal feed for Akhal-Teke horses and pioneering alternative protein sources from insects for poultry operations. Officials highlight these solutions as a means to decrease reliance on imports while enhancing domestic production efficacy.

Innovative methods for assessing the distinct golden shine of Akhal-Teke horses via advanced biochemical analysis were also displayed. Moreover, pharmaceutical and marine biotechnology projects were highlighted, including the creation of herbal remedies, essential oils, antioxidants, and biofertilizers sourced from regional flora and Caspian algae.

The conference underscored the pivotal role biotechnology plays as a catalyst for economic advancement in Turkmenistan. Authorities are optimistic that scientific innovation and modern biotechnological tools will further enhance agriculture, environmental sustainability, healthcare, and industrial productivity as part of the country's long-term growth strategy for 2024-2028.
