A military cargo aircraft from Turkey, carrying 20 individuals including crew members, crashed near the Georgia-Azerbaijan border on Tuesday while returning from Azerbaijan, as reported by the Turkish Defence Ministry.
In an official statement, the ministry announced, “Our C-130 military cargo plane, which departed from Azerbaijan heading home, has crashed at the boundary of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Search and rescue operations are actively ongoing.”
As per Georgia’s Sakaeronavigatsia air traffic control, the aircraft vanished from radar shortly after it entered Georgian airspace and did not send out a distress signal prior to the crash. The event transpired near the Sighnaghi region, roughly five kilometers from the Georgian border.
Emergency services in Georgia promptly initiated search and rescue missions in tandem with Turkish authorities. The Georgian Interior Ministry confirmed the crash site’s location, stating that rescue units were collaborating with Turkish and Azerbaijani governments to reach the wreckage.
Videos circulating on social media from Azerbaijan seem to depict the aircraft spinning out of control before crashing and bursting into flames, generating thick black smoke visible from afar. Additional footage from the crash area displayed burnt wreckage in a field, with local residents observing.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan voiced profound sadness over the incident, referring to those onboard as “our martyrs.” He confirmed that Turkey is collaborating closely with Georgian authorities to locate any survivors.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan offered condolences to Erdogan and the victims' families while expressing solidarity with Turkey during this challenging period.
Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan reached out to his Georgian counterpart, Maka Bochorishvili, to synchronize rescue efforts and ensure efficient communication between both nations.
The exact cause of the crash remains unconfirmed. The C-130 Hercules aircraft, produced by Lockheed Martin, is commonly utilized for military transport missions, recognized for its reliability and strength. Investigators are anticipated to analyze flight data once recovery operations conclude.
Additionally, Turkey’s Defence Ministry has urged the public and media to refrain from disseminating unverified images or videos of the crash to avoid spreading misinformation and to respect the victims’ relatives.
As search activities persist, rescue teams are operating in challenging conditions in the rugged terrain along the border. More updates regarding the situation of those onboard are expected as authorities access the site.
