A Welcome Return to Misrata

Turkish Airlines has officially resumed flights to Misrata, Libya’s third-largest city, after a long 10-year pause. Flights have restarted between Istanbul and Misrata, marking a renewed chapter in the airline’s regional connectivity efforts.

Why Flights Were Suspended

Since January 2015, Turkish Airlines had suspended service to Misrata due to civil unrest in Libya. Safety concerns and political instability led to the suspension, leaving travelers without a direct link between Libya and Istanbul for an entire decade.

Back in the Air—Three Times a Week

The new route operates three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Flights depart Istanbul at 11:30 a.m., arriving in Misrata at 2:25 p.m. The return flight leaves Misrata at 4:25 p.m., touching down in Istanbul at 7:15 p.m., providing convenient mid-day travel options.

Building on an Established Libyan Network

With this relaunch, Misrata becomes the airline’s third destination in Libya, joining Tripoli and Benghazi. This expanded network reflects a growing focus on connecting the country’s key urban centers with Turkey’s global aviation hub.

Affordable Fares to Encourage Travel

To mark the relaunch, passengers booking by September 9 can enjoy special fares: USD 349 one way from Istanbul to Misrata and USD 249 on the return leg. These fares are valid for travel until November 30, encouraging early bookings and travel momentum.

A Symbol of Regional Stability

The return of services to Misrata symbolizes improving conditions in Libya and the restoration of essential travel links. It’s a positive sign for the city’s recovery, suggesting growing confidence among international carriers.

Deep Historical Ties, Strong Economic Signals

Turkish Airlines emphasized historical ties between Libya and Turkey. Airline executives noted that resuming flights is a step toward deepening economic, social, and cultural relations—reinforcing both economic cooperation and regional solidarity.

Boost to Business, Tourism, and Trade

For Misrata—a major industrial hub and port city on the Mediterranean—restored flights mean reinvigorated business and tourism opportunities. Direct connections to Istanbul open doors for trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, fueling local economies.

Libyan Officials Welcome the Return

Libya’s Transport Minister and the Turkish Ambassador to Tripoli attended the return ceremony, underscoring the flights’ political and diplomatic significance. They highlighted the move as a sign of trust and Turkey’s commitment to Libya’s stability and prosperity.

A Broader African Aviation Vision

This relaunch sits within Turkish Airlines’ wider strategy of expanding into emerging markets across Africa. With 62 destinations across the continent, the airline continues diversifying its routes to meet growing travel demand and emerging regional opportunities.

Safety and Experience Matter

To ensure safe and reliable service, Turkish Airlines is deploying trusted Boeing 737 aircraft on the Istanbul–Misrata route. Airlines maintained rigorous safety protocols and coordination with Libyan aviation authorities to guarantee smooth operations.

Benefits for Travelers and Businesses

Passengers stand to gain from more travel options, competitive pricing, and improved schedules. Businesses in Misrata can now better connect with supply chains, investors, and markets in Istanbul and beyond, strengthening economic ties.

A Lift for Libya’s Air Connectivity

For Libya, this resumption is about more than flights—it is about reconnecting with the world. International air links are vital for rebuilding, investment, and integration. Turkish Airlines’ return supports the country’s broader recovery.

What Comes Next?

If this route performs well, Turkish Airlines may consider further increasing frequency or adding new destinations. A successful relaunch could inspire other carriers to explore expanding services in Libya once again.

The resumption of Turkish Airlines flights to Misrata marks a meaningful shift—from isolation to connection, from pause to progress. It reflects renewed hope and people-to-people ties, reminding us how powerful travel can be in bridging divides.
