Turkey Plans Major Aircraft Purchases from Boeing and Lockheed Martin

Turkey's Ambitious Aircraft Acquisition Plans

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to negotiate the purchase of hundreds of Boeing airliners and Lockheed Martin fighter jets, aiming to bolster Turkey's aviation and defense capabilities. In addition to these acquisitions, Turkey seeks over $10 billion in local production agreements to enhance domestic manufacturing. These plans are contingent upon approval from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Strategic Meeting with President Trump

The announcement comes ahead of a scheduled meeting between President Erdoğan and President Trump at the White House on September 25. The meeting is expected to finalize significant trade and military agreements, including the large-scale purchase of Boeing aircraft, a major F-16 deal, and the resumption of discussions regarding the F-35 fighter jets.

Background on F-35 Program Suspension

Turkey's involvement in the F-35 program was suspended in 2019 following its acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defense system, leading to the cancellation of a planned F-35 sale. Subsequently, Turkey agreed to purchase F-16 jets as a replacement. President Erdoğan has confirmed that discussions about acquiring F-35 fighter jets will be part of the upcoming meeting with President Trump.

Implications for U.S.-Turkey Relations

The proposed aircraft deals signify a potential strengthening of military and trade relations between the United States and Turkey. However, these agreements are subject to approval by President Trump, and the outcome of the upcoming meeting will be pivotal in determining the future trajectory of U.S.-Turkey defense cooperation.
