A Bangladesh court has sentenced British parliamentarian and former minister Tulip Siddiq to two years in prison over a corruption case linked to the alleged illegal allocation of a plot of land. The verdict was delivered in absentia, as Siddiq and the other co-accused were not present in court.
Siddiq’s aunt, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was sentenced to five years in jail, while Hasina’s sister, Sheikh Rehana, received a seven-year sentence. Prosecutors alleged that the three used their political influence and collusion with senior officials to unlawfully secure a 13,610-square-foot plot during Hasina’s tenure as prime minister.
Most of the 17 accused in the case were absent when the court announced the judgment. Siddiq, who resigned in January from her post as the UK minister responsible for financial services and anti-corruption efforts, has previously dismissed the allegations, calling them a “politically motivated smear.”
The case adds to a series of legal challenges faced by Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024 during widespread protests against her government. Last month, Hasina was sentenced to death over the government’s violent crackdown on demonstrators during those protests, and she has since received a combined 21-year prison sentence in other corruption cases.
The verdict in Siddiq’s case highlights ongoing tensions between political accountability and allegations of politically motivated prosecutions in Bangladesh. It also raises questions about the implications for international figures involved in foreign governance issues.
Siddiq’s sentencing, although carried out in absentia, may have diplomatic implications, especially given her previous role in the UK government and her connections to Bangladesh’s political leadership. Observers are closely watching how this case will affect relations between the UK and Bangladesh, and the broader political landscape in Dhaka.
