Historic Meeting Between Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa

Post by : Raina Nasser

President Donald Trump made history on Monday by hosting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa at the White House, the first time a Syrian leader has visited since Syria's independence from France in 1946. This meeting is part of a wider effort by the US to integrate Syria into a coalition aimed at combating the Islamic State group.

Al-Sharaa, who previously led the rebel forces that overthrew former President Bashar Assad, took on the interim presidency in January. As a result of this diplomatic outreach, the US has lifted longstanding sanctions against Syria, paving the way for enhanced military and strategic cooperation.

The two leaders initially met in May in Saudi Arabia, where Trump praised al-Sharaa's previous leadership. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that this visit exemplifies the president's dedication to fostering global diplomacy and engaging international leaders to promote peace.

The Syrian president arrived with a pressing agenda, seeking the permanent repeal of sanctions originally imposed due to human rights violations during the Assad regime. While the US has provisionally waived Caesar Act sanctions, a full repeal would necessitate approval from Congress. New proposals from Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Lindsey Graham discuss potential paths for either unconditional or conditional sanctions relief, each carrying substantial implications for US-Syria relations.

Experts believe that Syria's involvement in the US-led coalition against the Islamic State could enhance regional security measures. The restructured Syrian military, in partnership with Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, has already been engaged in combating extremist groups in the northeast.

Mouaz Moustafa, executive director of the Syrian Emergency Task Force, pointed out that lifting sanctions could attract international investments and aid Syria’s recovery process post-conflict, while conditional sanctions might impede economic recovery.

As this historic meeting unfolds, the Trump administration is taking significant steps toward re-establishing diplomatic relations with Syria, potentially marking a new era in Middle Eastern politics.
