Thailand is progressing with a comprehensive initiative aimed at reinforcing its cooperative framework as part of its 2026 development agenda. The discussions, led by Piyarat Tiyapairat, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, concentrated on elevating the efficiency and longevity of cooperatives nationwide.
During the session of the National Cooperative Development Committee, emphasis was placed on crafting a robust, transparent, and sustainable cooperative ecosystem. Participants from various sectors engaged in dialogue, sharing recommendations and insights to shape forthcoming policies and initiatives.
Digital technology was underscored as a critical focal point in the meeting. The government is set to enhance applications and online platforms, making them more user-friendly and accessible to the wider public. This effort aims at establishing a user-centric framework allowing cooperative members to swiftly and effectively access services.
The agenda also emphasizes improved data connectivity among government entities. By integrating systems and promoting innovation, the government intends to refine decision-making processes and service delivery. Partnering with educational and research institutions will foster the development of new technologies catered to the requirements of farmers and cooperative members.
Addressing debt issues is another core aspect of the plan. The government aims to assist numerous cooperative members in managing and diminishing their debt burdens, a move expected to enhance financial stability and improve living conditions for families.
The 2026 roadmap is grounded in the 5th Cooperative Development Plan, extending from 2023 to 2027. To date, a significant array of initiatives stemming from this plan have been launched, illustrating robust advances toward achieving the outlined objectives.
In the upcoming year, efforts will concentrate on bolstering underperforming cooperatives by enhancing management methodologies and fostering transparency. Technological advancements will be employed for auditing and governance to ensure greater accountability.
Additionally, the initiative incorporates the promotion of ethical conduct among cooperative staff and the backing of numerous cooperatives and farmer collectives. Plans are in place to establish high-performance model cooperatives that can serve as benchmarks for others.
Currently, Thailand boasts over nine thousand cooperatives with millions of members, particularly in the agricultural domain. These cooperatives significantly influence the national economy by contributing to income through lending, deposits, and agricultural services.
The meeting also acknowledged several national cooperative federations committed to advancing the sector. Officials are optimistic that with robust collaboration between government bodies and the incorporation of digital advancements, the cooperative framework will continue to thrive and promote sustainable progress in Thailand.
