Trump Advocates US Ownership of Greenland to Counteract Russia and China

Post by : Mina Rahman

US President Donald Trump has proclaimed that the United States should acquire Greenland to prevent Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic. He suggested that merely leasing the area or forming defense pacts is insufficient for enduring security, emphasizing that true ownership is essential to guarantee comprehensive protection.

Addressing reporters in Washington, Trump remarked that the US could secure Greenland through either “the easy way” or “the hard way,” kinds of comments that have alarmed allies. He pointed out that Greenland’s strategic positioning is vital for national defense, crucially for overseeing missile threats and military activities between North America and Europe.

The US maintains a military base at Pituffik in Greenland, with American troops present since World War II. Existing agreements with Denmark permit deploying more forces to the island if necessary. However, Trump contended that such agreements do not suffice, asserting that nations must own land to adequately defend it.

Denmark and Greenland have firmly dismissed Trump's comments, making it clear that Greenland is not for sale. Danish officials cautioned that any move to take control would undermine trans-Atlantic relations and potentially threaten NATO’s cohesion. Greenlandic political leaders reiterated that their future should be shaped exclusively by their own people.

Numerous NATO allies, including key European nations and Canada, expressed solidarity with Denmark, underscoring that Arctic security requires collaborative efforts by allies while upholding international law and territory sovereignty as outlined in the UN Charter.

Interest in Greenland has surged recently, given its abundance of natural resources, such as rare earth minerals, uranium, and prospective oil and gas reserves. The effects of climate change have led to melting ice, which has made these resources more accessible, thus elevating the island’s strategic worth.

Trump’s renewed attention on Greenland has sparked international discourse, with critics warning that such pronouncements could escalate tensions and undermine established alliances. Greenlandic officials underlined their aspiration for self-determination, affirming their desire to retain independence rather than become aligned with America or Denmark.
