U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Ukraine did not target a residence belonging to Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent drone incident, directly challenging claims made by the Kremlin. His comments aim to calm tensions at a sensitive time when talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war are underway.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said U.S. officials carefully reviewed the incident and found no proof that Putin’s residence was the intended target. According to Trump, something may have happened near the area, but the claims made by Russia were not supported by American findings.
“I don’t believe that strike happened,” Trump said. “We don’t believe that happened, now that we’ve been able to check.” His remarks marked a clear shift from the concern initially raised after Moscow’s statement last week.
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had claimed that Ukraine launched several drones at Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region. He said Russian air defenses stopped the drones and accused Kyiv of acting irresponsibly during an important phase of peace negotiations.
Ukraine strongly denied the accusation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his country did not carry out any attack on Putin’s residence. The claim came just one day after Zelenskyy traveled to Florida to meet Trump and discuss a proposed U.S.-backed plan aimed at ending the war.
Trump’s statement appears designed to lower the temperature between the two sides and prevent further escalation. By rejecting the Kremlin’s claim, the U.S. signaled that it does not accept Russia’s version of events without clear evidence.
The drone allegation highlights how quickly misinformation or disputed claims can raise fears of wider conflict. Attacks near high-profile leaders can trigger strong reactions, even when facts are unclear. Trump’s comments suggest the U.S. wants to avoid such misunderstandings from derailing diplomatic efforts.
As negotiations continue, both Washington and Kyiv are expected to remain cautious about actions or statements that could be used to justify further fighting. Trump’s message sends a signal that facts, not accusations, should guide the next steps toward peace.
