U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House for a high-stakes summit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and addressing longstanding defense and trade disputes.
F-35 Deal at the Forefront
A central topic of discussion was Turkey's desire to purchase F-35 fighter jets. The U.S. had previously imposed sanctions on Turkey following its acquisition of the Russian S-400 missile defense system in 2020, leading to Turkey's removal from the F-35 program. Erdogan is seeking to leverage improved relations under Trump's administration to persuade Washington to lift these sanctions and allow the sale of the advanced aircraft.
Broader Defense and Trade Cooperation
Beyond the F-35 issue, Erdogan is also advocating for the purchase of 40 new F-16 jets and upgrades to existing Turkish aircraft. Additionally, Turkey has expressed interest in acquiring 40 Eurofighter Typhoons. A potential $10 billion deal involving Turkish Airlines purchasing over 200 Boeing aircraft and associated GE engines is also on the table.
Regional Security Concerns
While both leaders find common ground on certain regional issues, such as their support for the central government in Syria, they remain sharply divided over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Erdogan has condemned Israeli actions as genocide, a stance that contrasts with Trump's more supportive position toward Israel.
Significance of the Summit
This meeting marks Erdogan's first visit to the White House in approximately six years, reflecting a shift in U.S.-Turkey relations under Trump's renewed leadership. The outcome of these discussions could have significant implications for NATO dynamics and the broader geopolitical landscape.
As the summit progresses, analysts will be closely watching for any breakthroughs in defense agreements and how the leaders navigate their differences on Middle Eastern conflicts.
