Trump Hints JD Vance May Lead His Movement, But Keeps 2028 Options Open August 6, 2025 — Washington, D.C.: President Donald Trump has said that Vice President JD Vance is likely to become the next leader of his well-known Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement. However, he also added that it's still too early to say anything for sure, and other Republican leaders could be in the running to carry on the movement in the future.

Trump made these comments during a White House event on Tuesday when a reporter asked him about a statement made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio had said in a television interview that JD Vance would be a great nominee if he chooses to run in the future.

I think most likely — in all fairness, he’s the vice president, Trump said, hinting that Vance is currently the top choice. I think Marco is also somebody that maybe would get together with JD in some form, Trump added, suggesting the two could work together in some way. Trump praised both men but stopped short of naming anyone officially as his successor.

Trump Keeps 2028 Plans Open

Although President Trump is currently in his second term as President, he continues to hold great power and influence within the Republican Party. Many wonder who will take his place after his term ends in 2029.

When asked about whether he would run for a third term, Trump told CNBC earlier that day that he would probably not go for it. The U.S. Constitution does not allow presidents to serve more than two terms. However, some of Trump’s allies have still hinted at exploring ways to keep him in power longer, an idea that has sparked debate and concern among some political experts.

Even though he has ruled out a third run, Trump hasn’t officially named a person to carry on his political message in the 2028 election. He has mentioned a few possible names in the past — including JD Vance and Marco Rubio — both of whom were once critical of Trump but are now strong allies.

JD Vance’s Rise in the Trump Camp

JD Vance, Trump’s current Vice President, is a former U.S. Senator from Ohio. He is known for his support of Trump’s style of economic populism — a belief that government policies should help working-class Americans before big businesses or foreign countries.

Vance’s journey from critic to loyal supporter of Trump is well-known. In earlier years, he had expressed doubt about Trump’s policies and leadership, but he later became one of his strongest supporters. When Trump ran for a second term in 2024, he chose Vance as his running mate, replacing former Vice President Mike Pence.

The relationship between Trump and Pence broke down after the 2020 election, when Pence refused to support Trump’s push to overturn the election results in Congress. Since then, Trump has kept a distance from Pence and built stronger ties with new allies like Vance.

Marco Rubio Still in the Picture

Another name that keeps coming up is Marco Rubio who currently serves as Secretary of State in Trump’s second administration. Rubio once ran against Trump in the 2016 presidential primary and criticised him sharply. However, like Vance, Rubio later joined Trump’s team and became an important member of his cabinet.

On Tuesday, Rubio appeared on Fox News and said JD Vance would be a great nominee for 2028 if he decides he wants to do that. This led to Trump being asked if he saw Vance as the heir to the MAGA movement.

Trump responded by saying Vance is probably favoured at this point because he is doing a good job as Vice President, but he also reminded everyone that many talented people in the Republican Party could step up.

I also think we have incredible people, some of the people on the stage right here, he said during the event, referring to others who might be considered for future leadership.

MAGA Movement Beyond Trump

The Make America Great Again slogan first became famous during Trump’s 2016 campaign. It has since become much more than a campaign slogan — it’s now a political movement with millions of supporters across the country. It focuses on strong borders, bringing jobs back to America, standing up to foreign rivals like China, and reducing the power of Washington insiders.

Trump’s movement has reshaped the Republican Party and shifted its focus toward more conservative and nationalist ideas. As he reaches the final years of his presidency, many wonder who will carry this message forward.

Some believe JD Vance is the perfect choice because of his close connection with Trump and his belief in similar ideas. Others say Rubio’s experience in government and foreign affairs could also make him a strong candidate.

Public Still Waits for an Answer

So far, Trump has not officially endorsed anyone for the 2028 race. He has made it clear that he still holds control over the direction of the Republican Party, and any future nominee will likely need his approval.

In February 2025, just weeks after starting his second term, Trump was asked if Vance would be his chosen successor. At that time, he said “no,” explaining that it was too early to decide.

Now, a few months later, he has become more open about Vance possibly leading the movement — but he’s also careful not to make any final statements.

What This Means for 2028 and Beyond

With the 2028 election still three years away, the political field remains wide open. While JD Vance may be the early favourite, many things can change between now and then.

Trump’s comment that it is too early to name a successor shows that he plans to keep control over the Republican race for now. This also gives him time to see how his Vice President, Cabinet members, and other rising stars perform in the months ahead.

Some believe that Trump is testing the waters — watching how the public reacts to names like Vance and Rubio before making a decision.

Meanwhile, supporters of the MAGA movement are closely watching to see who will be trusted with its future. Whoever steps into Trump’s shoes will have big responsibilities — not only to win elections but also to carry on a political movement that has changed American politics in a major way.
