Trump Endorses Palestinian Technocratic Council for Gaza's Future

Post by : Mina Rahman

President Donald Trump has expressed his backing for a newly established Palestinian technocratic council aimed at managing Gaza during a temporary transition phase. This council, referred to as the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, is set to oversee civil matters and work towards the stabilization of the area following months of intense conflict.

According to Trump, this committee will function under the auspices of an international entity named the “Board of Peace,” which he is set to lead. This board is tasked with supervising Gaza's governance throughout the transition, with its complete membership list to be unveiled shortly.

The governing committee will comprise 15 members and will be headed by Ali Shaath, a former deputy minister with ties to economic and industrial growth. The technocratic leadership aims to restore essential services, manage the reconstruction process, and maintain order without direct involvement from political factions.

This proposal gained acceptance from both Israel and Hamas in October as part of a wider ceasefire agreement. However, the truce remains tenuous, with ongoing violence reported from both sides since its inception. Key issues involve unresolved hostage situations, delays in border crossings, and Hamas's reluctance to disarm.

As negotiations proceed, international mediators face substantial hurdles, including discussions on Hamas's disarmament, coordinating Israeli troop withdrawals, and installing a peacekeeping force to ensure stability in Gaza.

Trump believes that regional partners are aiming for a comprehensive demilitarization framework, which he considers vital for enduring peace. Although some supporters view the technocratic administration as a proactive move towards stability, critics warn that international oversight of Gaza’s governance could jeopardize genuine autonomy.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with extensive damage, displacement, and resource shortages following months of conflict. As the technocratic administration looks to form, uncertainties linger over whether this transitional model can provide tangible peace and pave the way for a lasting political resolution.
