Washington, D.C. — In a notable shift from his earlier immigration stance, former President Donald Trump has publicly voiced his support for international students pursuing education in the United States. During an interview with Fox News, Trump remarked on the vital role foreign students play in sustaining American universities and colleges, terming them “beneficial” for both the academic and economic spheres.
Since resuming his presidential duties in January, the Trump administration has revoked numerous student visas and enforced harsh measures against international students engaged in political expressions, while intensifying visa acquisition demands. Prestigious institutions such as Harvard and Stanford have found themselves under the microscope regarding visa adherence. While some administrative actions have faced judicial challenges, appeals are still in progress.
Trump’s recent statements seem designed to mitigate issues within the higher education arena, which significantly benefits from the financial support of international students. “You don't want to sever ties with half of the students coming to our country — this would jeopardize our entire college system,” he asserted in his conversation with Fox News anchor Laura Ingraham.
Pointing out the economic implications, Trump highlighted that foreign students contribute substantial revenue to the U.S. economy, often paying higher fees than local students. He warned that decreasing international enrollment could lead to the closure of several educational institutions, including those historically serving Black communities.
Additionally, he mentioned the advantages derived from students originating from China and other nations, arguing that global engagement keeps American higher education competitive. “We earn trillions from our international students… My goal is for our educational infrastructure to flourish... It’s not merely a desire; I regard it as a business matter,” he pointed out.
The former president’s recent comments indicate a significant reversal from the strict immigration policy observed during his second term, which focused on limiting foreign student admissions. Experts suggest that this change may stem from fiscal motivations, as educational institutions may grapple with revenue deficits in the absence of international students.
The discussion surrounding foreign students remains contentious, with lawmakers navigating the delicate balance between national security issues and the extensive economic and cultural contributions that international students provide to the United States.
