US Travel Ban Expanded: 20 More Nations and Palestinians Added by Trump Administration

US Travel Ban Expanded: 20 More Nations and Palestinians Added by Trump Administration

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Tuesday, the Trump administration unveiled a significant expansion of US travel and immigration restrictions, incorporating 20 more countries along with individuals holding documents from the Palestinian Authority. This decision effectively doubles the original travel bans initiated earlier in the year.

The newly issued proclamation imposes a complete travel ban on five additional countries, while 15 other nations will fall under partial restrictions, set to take effect on January 1, as stated by officials.

Administration officials declared that this move is part of a wider initiative to reinforce US entry standards, citing national security concerns, immigration enforcement issues, and significant vetting challenges. They referenced problems such as unreliable civil documentation, corruption, high visa overstay rates, refusal of some governments to accept deported individuals, and political instability complicating screening efforts.

This expansion comes in the wake of increased scrutiny following the arrest of an Afghan national accused of shooting two National Guard members near the White House during the Thanksgiving holiday, with the suspect pleading not guilty.

Among the countries impacted by a full travel ban are Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria. Additionally, individuals traveling on documents issued by the Palestinian Authority are now fully prohibited from entering and immigrating to the US, signifying a significant intensification of restrictions on Palestinians.

Fifteen countries — including Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Ivory Coast, Dominica, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe — will face partial restrictions impacting both visitors and potential immigrants.

Certain exceptions remain in place, such as lawful permanent residents, current visa holders, diplomats, athletes, and those whose entry is considered beneficial to US national interests.

The announcement has faced strong backlash from immigration advocates and human rights organizations, who argue that the measure disproportionately targets individuals based on nationality rather than assessing individual risk. Advocacy groups have expressed concerns that the new policy eliminates previous exemptions for Afghans eligible for Special Immigrant Visas, designed for those who served US forces during the Afghanistan conflict.

Several governments affected are currently evaluating the announcement and seeking further explanations from US officials, while the administration highlighted that the travel restrictions established in June will continue to apply unchanged.
