Former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair is reportedly in high-level discussions about heading a transitional authority in Gaza, contingent on a ceasefire. The proposal is part of ongoing international efforts to plan the post-conflict future of the Palestinian territory.
The plan, discussed by US President Donald Trump and Arab leaders at the United Nations this week, envisions Gaza being temporarily governed by a UN-backed body with support from Gulf nations. The transitional authority would manage the territory before control is returned to Palestinian leadership.
Sir Tony Blair’s office stated that he would not support any plan that displaces Gaza’s residents, but reports indicate he has been seen as a potential leader for this transitional role.
In August, Blair attended a White House meeting with Trump to discuss post-war Gaza plans, described by US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff as “very comprehensive.” Specific details of the discussions have not been disclosed.
Blair has prior experience in Middle East diplomacy, serving as the Quartet’s envoy after leaving office in 2007. He focused on economic development in Palestine and creating conditions for a two-state solution.
The discussions coincide with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressing willingness to collaborate with Trump and other world leaders on a two-state peace plan. Abbas emphasized that Hamas should have no governing role in Gaza and must disarm.
The UK recently recognized the state of Palestine alongside Canada and Australia, a move later followed by France and Denmark. Israel and the US criticized the decision, viewing it as a reward for Hamas.
The Israeli military began its campaign in Gaza in response to a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. Since then, at least 65,419 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli operations, according to Hamas-run Gaza health authorities.
A UN commission of inquiry has accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, a claim that Israel denies.
As international leaders explore options to stabilize Gaza, Sir Tony Blair’s potential involvement in a transitional authority highlights the global effort to ensure a structured post-conflict recovery. The success of such plans will depend on cooperation between international actors, Palestinian leadership, and regional stakeholders.
