The Ghana national team has officially announced that former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey will be part of its preliminary squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a news that is stirring conversations in the football community. The 32-year-old athlete, currently donning the colors of Villarreal in Spain, was confirmed in the provisional 28-man squad unveiled by head coach Carlos Queiroz as the tournament approaches.
Partey’s selection is particularly noteworthy given the serious legal allegations he faces in the United Kingdom. Currently, he has pleaded not guilty to a series of charges including seven counts of rape and one of sexual assault, associated with claims made by four women from 2020 to 2022. In light of these proceedings, the Ghana football authorities have opted to retain him in the squad due to his crucial experience and skill in midfield.
Leaving Arsenal in 2025 after five notable seasons in the Premier League, Partey later joined Villarreal in La Liga. His consistent performance on the field has allowed him to remain an integral part of the Ghanaian team through the qualification rounds for the World Cup. Officials from the Ghana Football Association are confident that his leadership will be beneficial as the team gears up for the competition.
Prior to the World Cup, Ghana will start with a training camp in Cardiff, followed by a friendly against Wales on June 2. Coach Queiroz will finalize the squad by trimming it down to 26 players. Among the selected ones are a mix of seasoned players and promising youngsters, as Ghana prepares to face a formidable group in the tournament.
A notable absentee from the preliminary squad is Tottenham Hotspur forward Mohammed Kudus, who is sidelined with a long-term quadriceps injury. Kudus has not participated in matches since January due to complications during recovery. His absence will likely weigh heavily on Ghana’s offensive strategy, prompting reliance on talents like Antoine Semenyo and Inaki Williams.
Ghana finds itself in a challenging World Cup group that includes England, Croatia, and Panama. Analysts suggest that to progress past the group stage, experienced figures such as Partey and Jordan Ayew will be crucial for the team. As Ghana prepares for its fifth World Cup appearance, expectations are high to surpass their previous group-stage exit at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.
This controversial inclusion of Partey has incited discussions among football fans and online communities. While some argue that players should represent their countries until proven guilty, others call for stricter ethical standards from football associations. To date, the Ghana Football Association has yet to publicly elaborate on the issue surrounding Partey’s selection.
Despite the surrounding controversy, Partey remains one of Ghana’s most seasoned players. His debut for the national team came in 2016, and since then, he has established himself as a pivotal player for the Black Stars, having participated in significant tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. Ghanaian fans are eager to see if he secures a place in the final lineup and what impact he will make in the upcoming tournament.
