The much-anticipated horror-comedy, The Raja Saab, featuring Prabhas, has made a striking debut at the box office, demonstrating his unyielding fan base across different markets. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film has successfully crossed the ₹100 crore threshold worldwide on its opening day, inclusive of Thursday’s paid previews.
According to early figures from trade tracking site Sacnilk.com, The Raja Saab garnered about ₹26 crore from international markets on its first day. In India, it achieved a robust ₹54 crore in net collections, alongside ₹9 crore from paid previews, resulting in a total worldwide collection exceeding ₹100 crore gross.
This impressive opening underlines Prabhas’ box office magnetism, even with a shift in genre. In The Raja Saab, he assumes the role of a hypnotist, moving away from his recent action-packed portrayals.
Comparison With Previous Releases
Despite posting commendable opening figures, The Raja Saab falls short of the record held by Prabhas’ last release, Kalki 2898 AD. The sci-fi blockbuster amassed an astounding ₹191 crore globally on its first day, establishing it as one of the largest openers in Indian cinema history.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted that Kalki 2898 AD alone collected ₹27.5 crore from its Hindi version on opening day. The film held strong across all regions, even amidst a high-profile cricket semi-final matchup between India and England. Ultimately, Kalki 2898 AD concluded its theatrical journey with approximately ₹1100 crore worldwide.
Effect on Competing Releases
The premiere of The Raja Saab has impacted the box office performance of Dhurandhar, helmed by Aditya Dhar. After over a month of successful run and a collection of more than ₹1200 crore globally, Dhurandhar shows signs of slowing down.
On its 36th day, Dhurandhar reported a mere ₹3.5 crore in collections, vividly reflecting the influence of The Raja Saab’s entrance into the market.
About The Raja Saab
The Raja Saab is directed by Maruthi and produced by TG Vishwa Prasad under the People Media Factory banner. The film showcases a talented cast, including Prabhas, Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal, Riddhi Kumar, and Zarina Wahab.
Prabhas expressed that the vision behind The Raja Saab was to provide a full-on entertainer rather than another action-centric film. He lauded director Maruthi’s writing and described the climax as one of the film's strongest elements, hoping it will resonate well during the festive Sankranti season.
According to the HT review, while The Raja Saab strives to entertain through comedy and horror, it unfortunately lacks depth and originality. The review emphasized that the horror-comedy genre is not new to Indian cinema and suggested that the film could have benefited from a more compelling narrative to leave a lasting impression.
