Thailand is embarking on a significant initiative aimed at fostering eco-conscious agriculture and rural tourism. This comes as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Piyarat Tiyapairat visited farming areas in Chiang Rai Province, focusing on sustainable durian farming, cooperative enhancements, and agricultural tourism innovations.
During his tour across the Mae Chan and Mae Sai districts, the deputy minister engaged with young farmers and local agricultural collectives aiming to cultivate high-value crops. A standout feature of the trip was the renowned “Nang Non lava soil durian,” grown in uniquely volcanic soil near Doi Nang Non mountain, celebrated for its rich flavor, firm texture, and distinct delayed harvesting, which aids farmers in achieving premium market prices.
The Nang Non San Ton Pui Durian Community Enterprise farmers appealed for government assistance in enhancing infrastructure, processing facilities, and freeze-drying technology to boost production and expand export capabilities. Discussions also included plans to upgrade local water systems and reservoirs to enhance agricultural durability.
Deputy Minister Piyarat urged the community to establish a formal cooperative to enable members to secure low-interest loans and leverage additional government support initiatives. There were also proposals to interlink durian farms with Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park to develop eco-friendly one-day agricultural tourism routes for visitors.
The ministry also evaluated the Mae Sai Agricultural Cooperative, noted for its clean-energy practices and transparent financial management. This cooperative employs solar technology, reportedly slashing electricity expenses by nearly 50%, setting a benchmark for sustainable farming practices.
Further deliberations included a proposed irrigation project designed to redirect water from the Mae Sai River to irrigate over 20,000 rai of agricultural land in the Sri Mueang Chum Subdistrict. Authorities believe this advancement could drastically enhance water management and minimize contamination risks to local farmland.
The visit also spotlighted innovative rice farming techniques showcased by the Rak Thinn Koet New Theory Agriculture Group, where farmers utilize alternating wet-dry cultivation methods alongside Azolla plant systems to lessen greenhouse gas emissions while maximizing crop yield.
Concluding the visit, agricultural supplies, including mushroom growing blocks, organic fertilizers, bio-fertilizer solutions, and vegetable seeds, were distributed to local farmers as part of the mission to lower production costs and promote modern sustainable agriculture in northern Thailand.
