Thailand Halts 14 Major Construction Projects for 15 Days After Fatal Accidents

Post by : Saif Nasser

Thailand has ordered a 15-day suspension of 14 major construction projects following two fatal accidents this week. The Transport Ministry’s decision also affects all large-scale projects under its supervision, allowing officials to conduct thorough safety inspections and prevent future tragedies.

The incidents occurred during ongoing infrastructure work, including the construction of elevated highways. In one case, a crane collapsed in Samut Sakhon province, crushing two vehicles and causing injuries. Emergency teams acted quickly, but the accidents raised serious questions about construction safety standards.

Italian-Thai Development, one of the country’s largest construction companies, is involved in several of the halted projects. Authorities are using the suspension to inspect machinery, review safety protocols, and ensure workers are properly trained and protected.

A Transport Ministry official said the pause would help prevent further accidents. “The safety of workers and the public is our top priority,” the official said. “This temporary halt will allow us to enforce stricter standards and improve oversight on all major sites.”

Thailand has experienced rapid growth in infrastructure, with highways, railways, and urban projects expanding across the country. While this development boosts the economy, it also highlights the need for strong safety measures. Experts emphasize that machinery checks, worker training, and site supervision must never be compromised.

Local residents welcomed the decision, saying that public safety must come first. “It is sad that lives were lost,” said one resident of Samut Sakhon. “This suspension is an important step to make construction sites safer for everyone.”

The Transport Ministry is expected to release inspection results and safety recommendations after the 15-day halt. Companies failing to meet standards may face fines, stricter penalties, or extended suspensions.

This move demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting workers and the public while maintaining the country’s infrastructure growth. Safety, authorities say, cannot be sacrificed for speed or profit.
