In a significant move for Thailand's sports sector, the National Sports Development Fund Management Committee convened in Bangkok to outline a pivotal strategy for the future. This meeting brought together key officials to deliberate on plans that will shape sports development in the coming years.

Held on April 30, 2026, at the Office of the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri. He led discussions on critical issues relating to sports growth and comprehensive support for athletes, underscoring the meeting's importance with the presence of senior officials.

Attendees included Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, along with prominent ministry officials and representatives from various national sports organizations. Their involvement ensured a holistic consideration of diverse development factors.

Central to the meeting was the endorsement of a strategic framework for the National Sports Development Fund from 2027 to 2030. This long-range plan is designed to enhance Thailand's sports performance and ensure sustainable athlete support for international competition.

The committee also scrutinized the operational plan and financial allocations for 2027, emphasizing efficient fund utilization aligned with national objectives. Authorities highlighted sound financial management as crucial for long-term sports sustainability.

Moreover, the meeting focused on acknowledging athletes and coaches who excelled in international events, particularly those performing exceptionally at the recent Asian Beach Games in China. The committee approved rewards and benefits aimed at motivating continued high performance.

Additionally, athlete welfare was a significant topic, especially for participants in the ASEAN Para Games. The committee recognized the necessity of improving support systems to foster athlete growth and well-being.

To ensure equitable funding, discussions included forming a subcommittee to refine the criteria for budget allocation across various sports disciplines, aiming for a fair distribution of resources.

The committee also considered future revenue enhancements for the sports fund, discussing the potential of introducing specific taxes, notably a sugar tax, to generate additional resources for athlete development.

At the meeting's end, the chairman stressed the paramount importance of transparency and accountability in operations. He reiterated that all decisions must prioritize the interests and success of athletes, thereby instilling trust and commitment to advancing Thailand's standing in the global sports arena.
