On Thursday, a devastating incident in Nepal’s Rolpa district left at least 17 individuals dead when a jeep skidded off a hilly road, plunging approximately 700 meters into a gorge, as reported by local police. The accident occurred in the Jaljala area of Thawang Rural Municipality, a region often criticized for its hazardous roads and challenging travel conditions.
According to the authorities, the vehicle lost its grip on a muddy road during heavy rainfall. It veered off the narrow mountain path and fell down the steep slope into the gorge. Emergency responders and local residents quickly arrived at the scene, but relentless rain hampered recovery efforts considerably.
Police sources confirmed that the private jeep had been hired by residents heading to the Baisakh Purnima festival, scheduled for Friday in Jaljala. Police Inspector Sunil Thapa Nepali shared that the passengers were en route to the religious event when the tragic crash transpired.
Officials acknowledged that the exact passenger count remains unverified. Initial assessments indicated that the jeep may have been overloaded, a common occurrence in Nepal's remote hill regions where transport options are limited. Authorities have cautioned that the death toll may rise as the rescue and identification process continues.
This tragedy once again underscores the severe road safety issues facing Nepal’s mountainous areas. The combination of poor infrastructure, narrow winding routes, adverse weather, and overburdened vehicles frequently results in deadly mishaps throughout the nation. During the monsoon season, muddy roads and landslides exacerbate travel dangers in remote locations like Rolpa.
Rescue and recovery efforts were underway late into the night, involving local police, emergency teams, and community members battling the adverse conditions. Additional security personnel were dispatched to assist in transporting victims from the challenging terrain.
Nepal has experienced numerous fatal road accidents in recent years due to its difficult mountainous landscape and inadequate transport infrastructure. Safety advocates have consistently urged the need for improved road safety measures, thorough vehicle inspections, and enhanced emergency responses to mitigate the rising fatality rates in these remote regions.
