Thailand's government has rolled out an extensive public transport relief initiative labeled the “Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40” project, enabling commuters to benefit from subsidized MRT fares via the Paotang mobile app. The initiative will kick off on June 1 and continue through September 30, 2026, encompassing four key MRT lines in Bangkok.
As stated by the Mass Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA), this program aims to lessen the financial strain on citizens grappling with the ongoing global energy crisis triggered by regional conflicts. Officials believe this initiative will assist individuals in managing day-to-day transportation expenses while promoting the use of affordable and secure public transit options.
The subsidy encompasses the MRT Blue Line, MRT Purple Line, MRT Yellow Line, and MRT Pink Line. Under this scheme, the Thai government will cover 60 percent of the fare, requiring riders to pay only 40 percent. The financial support is capped at 200 baht per person daily and a total of 1,000 baht per person during the month throughout the program’s duration.
Commuters can avail of this subsidy directly through the Paotang application at all MRT ticket counters from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM. They will need to navigate to the “Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40” section in the app, scan the QR code displayed at the ticket counter, confirm the payment, and collect their one-way ticket prior to boarding.
It is important to note that the subsidy is valid only for purchases of single-trip tickets for regular passengers and senior citizens. The benefits cannot be applied to balance top-ups for Rabbit Cards, EMV Spider Cards, or MRT EMV Cards. Moreover, the scheme does not apply to parking fees, penalty charges, or any refunds associated with MRT tickets.
Eligibility criteria stipulate that participants must be Thai nationals aged 18 years or older at the time of registration. Those holding State Welfare Cards or who have been excluded from previous co-payment initiatives are not permitted to enroll in this project. Authorities have established multiple helpline services to assist passengers with queries regarding both registration and usage.
The MRTA has affirmed that all MRT operators involved are fully prepared for this implementation and anticipate a strong public response throughout the four-month subsidy initiative. Transport officials are optimistic that this program will bolster public confidence in Bangkok’s urban transport system while alleviating travel costs for numerous commuters.
