In a significant move to alleviate living costs, Thailand's government has inaugurated an expansion of the Thai Helps Thai Plus 60/40 program, now inclusive of four major MRT rail lines. This initiative aims to lower transportation expenses for commuters and promote the increased usage of public transport in the capital.
The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand alongside the operators of the Blue Line, Purple Line, Yellow Line, and Pink Line have committed to this subsidy program. This effort is part of a wider government strategy to relieve financial burdens on households and enhance the affordability of daily travel.
From June 1 to September 30, 2026, eligible passengers can claim fare subsidies via the Paotang mobile app, with the government covering 60% of the MRT fare while commuters will be responsible for the remaining 40%.
The subsidy will be limited to a maximum of 200 baht per person each day, capped at 1,000 baht per month. Officials assert that this program will significantly benefit regular commuters relying on rail transport for work and education.
This initiative comes at a crucial time as households grapple with increasing living costs. By reducing commuting expenses, the government seeks to enhance consumer purchasing power and stimulate economic activity across the nation.
Officials also underscored the broader advantages of promoting mass transit. A shift towards increased rail use is expected to alleviate road congestion, decrease fuel usage, and lead to better air quality in urban centers. This policy is in line with the long-term vision for a more sustainable and effective transportation framework.
Eligible passengers may acquire single-journey MRT tickets through the Paotang app and redeem them at ticket counters across the participating lines. Services will run daily from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. to ensure ample access for commuters during the subsidy period.
Government representatives indicated that more initiatives aimed at mitigating living expenses and enhancing public transportation access may follow. The administration reaffirms its dedication to helping citizens navigate economic challenges while promoting safe and affordable urban mobility.
