In a significant move for educational staff, the Thai government has unveiled plans to enhance welfare and improve living conditions for educational personnel by transitioning numerous contract workers into temporary employees as part of a new employment framework. This initiative aims to bolster job security, elevate morale, and improve working environments for teachers and support staff nationwide.
As per the Prime Minister’s Office, this reform strategy is being executed through the Office of the Basic Education Commission under the Ministry of Education. Authorities have confirmed that, starting in the 2026 fiscal year, a total of 7,588 contract roles will be reshaped into temporary employment positions as part of a wider educational sector overhaul.
Deputy government spokesperson Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn elaborated that this policy is intended to afford teachers and educational staff with enhanced legal protections, better welfare provisions, and more secure career paths. Officials assert that improved conditions for educators will directly benefit learning outcomes for students throughout Thailand.
Under the new salary structure, assistant teachers who possess a five-year bachelor's degree or a graduate diploma in teaching professionalism will earn up to 19,120 baht monthly. Those with a four-year bachelor's degree will receive about 18,220 baht per month. Meanwhile, teaching assistants and support staff can expect salaries around 11,000 baht monthly, including cost-of-living allowances.
Government representatives indicated that this salary adjustment is aimed at achieving fairer compensation based on educational qualifications, job roles, and actual work performed within the school settings. The initiative also seeks to mitigate the uncertainty faced by contract workers who previously had no long-term employment assurances.
The Ministry of Education has directed regional educational offices and associated agencies to hasten the recruitment and conversion process for contracts. The conversion is scheduled to be completed between June 2 and September 30, 2026, ensuring that all approved educators operate under this revised employment structure within the stipulated timeframe.
Officials emphasized that recruitment and contract transitions must adhere to principles of transparency, fairness, and accountability. Analysts believe that this policy could play a pivotal role in fortifying Thailand’s education system by enhancing teacher retention, boosting morale, and setting higher standards in classrooms across the nation.
