A teenager from Texas, Luke Garrett Resecker, has been sentenced to 65 years in prison for his role in a devastating crash that resulted in the deaths of six members of an Indian-origin family in 2023. Authorities confirmed that Resecker, then 17, was under the influence of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, at the time of the accident.
The tragic incident took place on December 26, 2023, approximately at 4:00 pm on US Highway 67 near County Road 1119, south of Cleburne, Texas. The victims were returning from a family outing at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, traveling in a Honda Odyssey minivan when Resecker’s Chevy Silverado veered into their lane.
Out of the seven passengers in the minivan, six lost their lives instantly: Rushil Barri (28) from Irving, along with five family members from Georgia: Naveena Potabathula (36), Nageswararao Ponnada (64), Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada (60), 10-year-old Krithik Potabathula, and 9-year-old Nishidha Potabathula. The only survivor, Lokesh Potabathula, is now paralyzed from the waist down, having tragically lost his wife, children, cousin, and in-laws in the collision.
Resecker’s 17-year-old passenger, Preston Glass, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, leading to lasting mental impairment. Authorities found THC wax, a vape pen, and marijuana in Resecker’s vehicle. Toxicology tests confirmed the presence of THC in his system during the crash.
During the trial in Johnson County, prosecutors stressed that the crash was entirely avoidable, shedding light on the risks of impaired driving. Assistant District Attorneys Connor Day and Stephanie Miller described it as a grave reminder of the dire outcomes tied to reckless driving.
In her closing arguments, Miller invoked the names of the victims, affirming, “Justice for Rushil, Justice for Naveena, Justice for Nageswararao, Justice for Sitamahalakshmi, Justice for Krithik, Justice for Nishidha, and justice for Lokesh and this community.”
Facing multiple charges, including intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana, Resecker's sentencing is viewed as a crucial move towards accountability for one of the most tragic traffic incidents involving impaired driving in the area.
This case highlights the dangerous repercussions of drug-impaired driving, serving as a cautionary tale for teenagers and drivers across the nation regarding the perils of driving under the influence.
