Tesla, led by Elon Musk, is appealing to its dedicated online supporters to expedite the introduction of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in Europe. In a recent X post, the company called for followers to reach out to the Dutch transit authority, Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW), encouraging them to endorse FSD testing on European roads.
After over a year of attempts to bring its FSD technology to Europe, Tesla has pinpointed the Netherlands as its best entry point. The company asserts that its internal evaluations have safely logged over 1 million kilometers across 17 nations in Europe, though some reports indicate inconsistencies between Tesla’s findings and local traffic data.
Musk's Ambitious Plans Depend on FSD Approval
Tesla has set high goals connected to Elon Musk’s significant compensation package, which entails:
20 million vehicle deliveries
10 million active subscriptions for FSD
Deployment of 1 million robots
Commercial launch of 1 million Robotaxis
$400 billion in adjusted EBITDA across four quarters
Securing FSD approval in Europe is crucial for meeting these objectives.
Challenges and Strategic Efforts
Under current EU regulations, Tesla’s FSD remains unlawful in its existing form. The company claims that adjusting the system to align with European standards could render the technology unsafe and impractical in numerous situations. By obtaining an exemption in the Netherlands, Tesla aims to streamline its market entry and potentially expand approval throughout the European Union, contingent upon the European Commission's vote.
This social media initiative has already spurred considerable engagement, attracting millions of views and numerous comments on X. However, the RDW has promptly advised the public to minimize contact with them, asserting that such messages would not impact their decision-making process or schedule.
Tesla seeks RDW approval by February 2026, setting the stage for broader operations across Europe. Although the campaign has garnered public interest, the company continues to navigate a complex regulatory environment where safety and compliance are of utmost importance.
