India and the European Union (EU) have reached a landmark trade agreement that promises to reshape global trade relations. Announced on January 27, 2026, the deal aims to cut tariffs on nearly all goods traded between the two regions, opening new opportunities for businesses and consumers alike.
The agreement is expected to significantly increase trade. EU exports to India are projected to double by 2032, with tariffs eliminated or reduced on 96.6% of traded goods by value. European companies are set to save about 4 billion euros ($4.75 billion) in duties. On the other side, India will benefit from reduced tariffs on European products, including cars, machinery, electrical equipment, chemicals, iron, and steel.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the pact “the mother of all deals,” highlighting that it will benefit India’s 1.4 billion citizens and millions across Europe. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, “Europe and India are making history today. This is only the beginning.”
The agreement excludes sensitive agricultural products such as soya, beef, sugar, rice, and dairy. However, it drastically lowers tariffs on Indian exports like marine goods, leather, textiles, chemicals, rubber, metals, and gems and jewellery. For automobiles, India will gradually reduce tariffs from as high as 110% to just 10% over five years, benefiting brands such as Volkswagen, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. Tariffs on wines and spirits are also being lowered significantly.
This deal comes amid growing global trade tensions and after years of negotiations. It signals India and the EU’s commitment to stronger economic ties while reducing reliance on the United States. Legal checks and procedures are expected to take five to six months before the agreement is fully implemented.
The India-EU trade deal is a historic step toward deeper economic cooperation. By opening markets, cutting tariffs, and promoting investment, the agreement offers a bright future for businesses, workers, and consumers on both sides.
