In a significant blow to movie enthusiasts, the Madras High Court has nullified an earlier directive by a single judge that mandated the Censor Board to clear the censor certificate for the much-anticipated film, Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay. This verdict further postpones the theatrical release of the film.
The court remarked that the single judge had not allowed sufficient time for the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to respond prior to granting a certification. As such, the film cannot be screened unless it receives proper authorization from the CBFC.
A new hearing concerning the censor certificate is set to be held soon at the Madras High Court. Earlier, on January 20, the court reserved its judgment and intended to declare a decision on January 27 (today).
Jana Nayagan, marketed as Vijay's final film before he fully engages in politics, was initially slated for global release on January 9, in time for the Pongal festivities. However, shortly before its release, the Censor Board escalated the film to the revising committee after receiving a complaint.
The production company, KVN Productions, appealed to the Madras High Court, which had initially instructed the Censor Board to award a UA certificate after certain modifications. Nevertheless, the board contested this ruling, leading to a two-judge panel in the Madras High Court opting to stay the earlier decision and adjourn the case until January 21, after the Pongal break.
Subsequently, KVN Productions sought immediate relief from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court listened to the case on January 15 but ultimately dismissed the request, returning it to the Madras High Court for further proceedings.
Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan features an ensemble cast, including Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, and Priyamani.
Eager fans are looking forward to the release of this film, but the final approval from the Censor Board remains ungranted, causing delays in the launch of the eagerly awaited project.
