Renowned Telangana Poet Andesri Passes Away at 64

Post by : Raina Nasser

Hyderabad — Esteemed Telangana poet and lyricist Andesri, famed for composing the official state anthem “Jaya Jayahe Telangana”, has passed away at the age of 64 while being treated at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad. His death signifies the end of an era for one of the most pivotal figures in the Telangana movement.

As reported by hospital staff, Andesri’s condition worsened late Sunday night. He reportedly suffered a collapse at his home in Lalaguda, prompting his family to rush him to Gandhi Hospital. Unfortunately, despite medical intervention, he breathed his last around 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

Born Ande Yellaiah in Rebarthi village, Jangaon district, Andesri gained prominence without formal education. His innate love for poetry and language won him immense admiration throughout the region. His celebrated work, “Mayamai Pothunnadamma”, garnered him significant acclaim, leading Kakatiya University to confer upon him an honorary doctorate for his literary and cultural contributions.

A dedicated advocate for the Telangana movement, Andesri’s works became potent expressions of the aspirations for statehood. His lyrical triumph, “Jaya Jayahe Telangana”, was officially adopted as the Telangana State Song, embodying the pride and spirit of the region.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed profound sorrow at the poet’s passing, calling it an irreplaceable loss to the cultural and literary fabric of the state. He fondly remembered honoring Andesri during Telangana Formation Day earlier this year and stated that the poet would receive full State Honours in his final rites.

Andesri leaves behind a son and three daughters. Tributes from poets, authors, and admirers across Telangana are pouring in, celebrating him as a voice of the people whose poetry resonated with the spirit of an entire movement.
