Tanzania's Election Violence Inquiry Reveals 518 Fatalities

Post by : Shakul

An inquiry into the unrest following Tanzania's elections last year has confirmed that at least 518 individuals were killed amid the turmoil. The report, presented by a governmental commission, highlights severe political unrest faced by the nation.

Led by Mohamed Chande Othman, the commission indicated that the death toll may be underestimated. Many families reportedly buried their deceased relatives without hospital records, complicating the verification of casualty numbers.

The violence erupted on October 29, initiated by youth protests against perceived government suppression of opposition voices. The conflict worsened as opposition figures encountered legal obstacles, with one prominent candidate disqualified from participating in the elections.

The aftermath saw thousands injured, with more than 800 suffering from gunshot wounds. Additionally, 245 individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns as some families assert that bodies observed in morgues have since gone missing.

While the commission dismissed allegations of mass graves, it confirmed that the protests were fraught with violence and coordinated attacks across multiple locations.

In response, President Samia Suluhu Hassan pledged to implement reforms based on these findings. She proposed the establishment of a reconciliation commission and a criminal investigations unit aimed at identifying those accountable for the unrest, including funding and organizational aspects.

Additionally, the government plans to reassess firearm usage during the violence and probe reports of abductions and missing persons. These revelations are projected to shape potential constitutional reforms and enhance mechanisms to avert future conflicts.
