On Wednesday, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te expressed his intention to persist in acquiring US weaponry, emphasizing that this defense alliance is crucial for sustaining peace and stability within the Taiwan Strait.
In a press conference commemorating two years of his presidency, Lai articulated the mounting military and political pressures Taiwan encounters from China. He remarked that if afforded the chance to engage directly with US President Donald Trump, he would underscore that Taiwan’s defense spending is essential for safeguarding regional tranquility.
Highlighting that Taiwan's fate should not be dictated by external powers, Lai insisted that democracy and freedom are not provocations. He reaffirmed Taiwan’s belief in the necessity of strength to uphold peace and avert conflict in the area.
His comments followed Trump's recent mention of a potential arms supply to Taiwan as a bargaining chip in talks with China. Earlier this year, the US authorized a landmark military aid package for Taiwan, valued at billions of dollars.
In response to Lai's statements, Chinese officials condemned him for fostering separatist sentiments and inflaming tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing holds steadfast in its claim that Taiwan is part of its territory and repeatedly cautions against outside interference.
Lai reiterated Taiwan's openness to peaceful, respectful discussions with China, firmly rejecting any attempts to enforce reunification through political coercion. He stressed the importance of protecting Taiwan's democratic institutions.
In addition to security issues, Lai brought attention to Taiwan’s economic prowess, particularly in technology and semiconductor production. He unveiled a substantial economic initiative aimed at modernizing traditional sectors and aiding small to medium enterprises.
The President expressed that collaboration with the United States and other democratic nations would expand in fields related to security, commerce, and advanced technology. He articulated Taiwan’s intent to remain a stable and responsible stakeholder in the Indo-Pacific region.
