In Singapore, a Chinese national is facing charges for allegedly stealing bank cards from a fellow passenger aboard a flight arriving from South Korea. This incident has raised concerns regarding the safety of valuables on international flights.
The 59-year-old suspect was detained at Changi Airport Terminal 1 on May 18 during a focused initiative by the Airport Police Division aimed at reducing theft incidents related to air travel.
Police reports indicate that authorities found two bank cards in the suspect's possession, linking them to another passenger on the same flight. Investigators believe the accused discreetly accessed the victim’s belongings while they remained unaware.
Preliminary inquiries suggest that the accused took a bag from the overhead storage, moved to another seat, and proceeded to open the bag, extracting the wallet with two bank cards before returning the bag to its original place.
Following the incident, the suspect exited the plane without drawing attention, while the victim discovered the theft only later, prompting a swift response from airport officials.
Singaporean authorities have stated that theft on flights is treated with utmost seriousness due to aviation security and passenger safety concerns. They advise travelers to stay alert and secure their valuables, especially when using overhead compartments.
The accused now faces charges related to theft onboard an aircraft, which could result in a maximum prison sentence of three years, a hefty fine, or both, under Singaporean law. Investigations into the matter are currently in progress.
