Tabreed and Johnson Controls Partner to Launch Advanced Cooling Tech

Tabreed, the world’s leading company in district cooling, has signed a major agreement with Johnson Controls, a global expert in smart and sustainable buildings. This agreement will speed up the development and use of new, advanced cooling technologies.

The partnership focuses on making cooling systems more energy-efficient, reliable, and cost-effective. It will also support regional climate goals and corporate plans for environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities. One of the main goals is to use the latest centrifugal chillers, which are special machines that cool water or air efficiently, to reduce environmental impact. Johnson Controls will also provide performance analytics through smart platforms. These platforms help track how well the systems are working in real time, prevent breakdowns, and optimise energy use.

The agreement was officially signed at a special ceremony at Tabreed’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi. Present at the ceremony were Tabreed’s CEO, Khalid Al Marzooqi, and Johnson Controls’ Vice President and President for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), Richard Lek.

Speaking after the ceremony, Khalid Al Marzooqi said that this partnership marks an exciting new phase for Tabreed, supporting its long-term strategy. He mentioned that the company already has several ongoing and upcoming projects. This agreement ensures a steady supply of important equipment for these large-scale projects. By combining Tabreed’s operational experience with Johnson Controls’ advanced chillers, both companies aim to provide better energy efficiency and reliable service for customers and communities.

Richard Lek added that working with Tabreed allows them to show how advanced technologies and data-driven services can improve district cooling systems on a large scale. He explained that the collaboration will help meet the growing need for cooling in fast-growing cities while also reducing power use, cutting emissions, and improving the quality of life for residents.

The partnership is based on two main areas:

1. Advanced Chiller Technology:
   Johnson Controls will supply large-capacity chillers with modern features such as variable-speed drives and modular systems. These chillers are designed to save energy, reduce maintenance, and fit efficiently within Tabreed’s cooling plants.

2. Lifecycle Services:
   The collaboration also includes comprehensive support for the entire life of the equipment. This includes designing and engineering, helping with installation, ensuring the systems work efficiently after installation (commissioning), performance guarantees, upgrades and retrofits, and remote monitoring through network operation centers. These services help extend the life of the equipment and reduce overall ownership costs.

The agreement also aligns with global sustainability goals. It prioritises low-energy, low-emission technologies, uses environmentally friendly refrigerants, and follows circular-economy principles to improve efficiency. By linking improvements at the plant level to larger policy goals, this partnership will contribute to reducing carbon emissions and supporting a greener future.
