In a thrilling Major League Soccer (MLS) game, Lionel Messi once again showed why he is one of the greatest players in football. Messi scored two goals and provided an assist to help Inter Miami beat DC United 3-2 on Saturday night. His performance not only led Miami to a crucial win but also moved him to the top of the MLS goal-scoring charts.
The match began with Inter Miami taking an early lead. Tadeo Allende scored the first goal for Miami, giving the home team a strong start. This victory also marked a small milestone for Miami, as it was their first time winning back-to-back games since early July. The win was important, lifting Inter Miami into fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings. They remain eight points behind the conference leaders, Philadelphia, but have three games in hand, which could help them close the gap.
DC United fought hard to stay in the game. Christian Benteke scored an equaliser in the 53rd minute, making it 1-1. Benteke also assisted one of his team’s plays, showing why he is an important player for DC United. However, Miami’s Lionel Messi quickly regained the lead for his team. In the 66th minute, Messi scored after receiving a perfect pass from Jordi Alba. Messi cleverly positioned himself and finished calmly past the goalkeeper Luis Barraza.
The game continued to be exciting in the second half. Miami’s Mateo Silvetti had a chance to score from a penalty in the 72nd minute, but his shot hit the crossbar. Despite this, Messi continued to dominate the field. In the 85th minute, he scored his second goal of the match, this time after receiving a long pass from Sergio Busquets. Messi dribbled past a defender and fired a powerful shot into the top-left corner of the goal, securing the win for Miami.
DC United did not give up until the final whistle. Substitute Jacob Murrell scored a late goal, making the final score 3-2. Despite Murrell’s effort, Miami held on to claim the victory.
This game was particularly important for Messi in the race for the MLS Golden Boot. Before the match, Nashville’s Sam Surridge led the goal charts with 21 goals, but he did not score in his team’s 3-2 loss to Orlando. Messi’s two goals pushed him ahead in the race, with 22 goals now to his name. Fans also saw Messi in action threatening DC United’s goalkeeper multiple times, almost scoring a third goal for Miami, showing his constant presence and skill on the field.
Overall, Messi’s brilliance on the pitch helped Inter Miami secure a vital win. His ability to score and create opportunities for his team makes him a key figure in the MLS this season. Miami fans will hope that Messi continues this form as the team aims to climb higher in the Eastern Conference and compete for the playoffs.
