Ericsson has been awarded a £2 billion ($2.7 billion) contract by VodafoneThree to supply 5G communications equipment across the UK, a deal that extends into the next decade. Ericsson's portion of the contract is valued at 12.5 billion Swedish crowns ($1.3 billion), making it the primary vendor in this partnership.
Nokia, the Finnish telecom equipment provider, will also play a significant role by supplying radio access network (RAN) and core network equipment to approximately 7,000 sites across the UK. This marks Nokia's return as a supplier to Vodafone and Three in the UK market.
This agreement follows the merger of Vodafone and CK Hutchison's UK operations in June, forming VodafoneThree. The newly formed entity has committed to investing £11 billion ($14.8 billion) over the next decade to develop one of Europe's most advanced 5G networks.
Ericsson's contribution includes deploying AI-powered, energy-efficient hardware and smart antennas designed to enhance 5G data speeds in major cities such as London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast. The implementation of these technologies is expected to significantly improve network performance and user experience.
This substantial contract provides a significant boost to both Ericsson and Nokia amid challenges in other markets, including a general slowdown and the impact of tariffs affecting their profitability in the United States.
