American actress Sydney Sweeney has transformed into former professional boxer Christy Martin for the new biopic “Christy”, which chronicles Martin’s life both inside and outside the boxing ring.
The movie, directed and co-written by David Michôd, follows two decades of Martin’s career and personal struggles. Martin, who rose to fame in the 1990s, became one of the most successful female boxers in history. The film also portrays her difficult relationship with her coach and husband, Jim Martin, played by Ben Foster, showing how he tried to control her career and life.
Sweeney said she felt a great responsibility to tell Martin’s story accurately. She spent about three months preparing for the role, working with a boxing coach, a weight trainer, and a nutritionist. She gained 35 pounds (16 kg) to match Martin’s build during her boxing years and trained intensely for the fight scenes. She described some scenes as very realistic, even suffering a concussion during filming, and noted that some of the staged punches may have caused minor injuries to other actors.
Christy Martin, now 57, was the first woman to sign with promoter Don King and fought professionally from 1989 to 2012. She also founded “Christy’s Champs”, a non-profit organization supporting victims of family abuse. The movie highlights Martin’s achievements in boxing as well as her courage in overcoming abuse, both in her personal life and career.
Martin closely participated in the film’s production, visiting the set regularly to provide guidance and ensure accuracy. Sweeney said she was inspired by Martin’s advocacy work and wanted to reflect her courage and strength in the role.
Co-writer Mirrah Foulkes said the film is about “many things, not just boxing.” Director Michôd added that the movie explores coercive-control relationships and the challenges many women face in similar situations worldwide. He said understanding these relationships was essential to telling Martin’s story with honesty.
The biopic premiered at the London Film Festival on Friday. Sweeney described the experience as a heavy responsibility, noting that Martin’s story is inspiring for many people, especially those who have experienced abuse or struggled to find their own voice.
The film is expected to reach global audiences later this year and has already received praise for Sweeney’s physical transformation and the sensitive handling of Martin’s personal story.
