In a significant development in one of France’s most notorious robberies, law enforcement has apprehended two individuals connected to the $102 million heist at the Louvre Museum. One suspect was detained at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport as he attempted to escape to Algeria, while the other was captured shortly after in the surrounding Paris area.
The art world has been abuzz since the brazen heist occurred on October 19, when a group of thieves invaded the museum’s Galerie d’Apollon, a showcase of royal jewels once worn by French queens. Employing a crane to smash a window, they executed the theft in less than seven minutes, escaping on motorbikes.
Authorities have identified the arrested individuals as men in their 30s from the Seine-Saint-Denis region—one is a French citizen, and the other holds dual citizenship in France and Algeria. Local reports indicate that both suspects were already on the radar of French law enforcement.
The suspects are currently being questioned as a team of 100 investigators and forensic experts examines CCTV footage and sifts through over 150 pieces of evidence collected from both the museum and nearby locations. Their arrest marks a pivotal moment in a case that has left the public astonished by its sheer boldness.
Among the invaluable items taken during the Louvre heist were royal treasures including a tiara and brooch belonging to Empress Eugenie, an emerald necklace and earrings once owned by Empress Marie Louise, as well as a sapphire set connected to Queen Marie-Amelie. Each artifact carries its own rich history and significance, now vanishing due to a calculated act of greed.
A video released shortly after the incident shows one suspect nonchalantly breaking into a glass display while tourists mill about—highlighting the meticulous planning behind the crime. Another clip showcases the robbers using a hydraulic lift to escape, camouflaged as construction workers.
The Louvre heist has ignited one of France’s largest investigations in decades. Authorities continue to search for possible accomplices and the elusive stolen jewels, with international agencies placed on alert to monitor any attempts to sell the purloined artifacts.
The Louvre Museum, celebrated globally for its masterpieces including the Mona Lisa, has since bolstered its security to prevent a similar audacious heist in the future. Meanwhile, the question lingers—what has become of the treasures that once adorned the queens of France?
