Not All Stress Harms Your Heart, According to Renowned Surgeon

Post by : Saif Nasser

Stress is frequently viewed as an adversary to optimal health, particularly regarding the heart. We often hear that it can lead to high blood pressure and heart diseases. However, seasoned heart surgeon Dr. Jeremy London asserts that not all stress is detrimental. In fact, some forms of stress may actually fortify and safeguard your heart.

On November 12, in a video shared via Instagram, Dr. London, who brings 25 years of heart surgery experience, shed light on this topic. He clarified that, while chronic emotional stress can be detrimental, certain types of beneficial stress can maintain heart health.

He stated, "The right type of stress—self-selected as opposed to imposed—can genuinely protect your heart."

Dr. London detailed the body's diverse responses to stress. Exposure to constant anxiety results in the release of hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which, if persistent, can elevate blood pressure, foster inflammation, and heighten the risk of heart attacks. This state is recognized as chronic stress, detrimental to both heart and mind.

Contrastingly, stress stemming from positive challenges—like engaging in sports, acquiring new skills, or pursuing goals—can enhance the body's resilience. This is often termed "good stress" or "eustress."

Dr. London elaborated that such stress promotes the heart's ability to adapt and face future pressures more adeptly. For instance, physical exertion such as running or swimming applies temporary stress on both the heart and muscles, encouraging increased circulation and endurance. Over time, this training makes the heart more robust.

The same principle applies to mental challenges. Tackling a new task, preparing for an examination, or mastering time management can generate short-lived stress that ultimately results in greater confidence and emotional stability.

The crux of the matter, according to Dr. London, is the element of control. Stress that arises unexpectedly—such as job loss, family disputes, or financial struggles—transpires outside our control and can be harmful. In contrast, when one chooses to take on a challenge like setting fitness objectives or public speaking, the resulting stress becomes an empowering experience.

He continued to explain that this favorable stress acts as a form of "training" for both mind and body, equipping us to manage challenging situations more effectively in life.

Healthcare professionals assert that experiencing some level of stress is natural. The emphasis should be on its management. Experts advise engaging in regular physical activity, practicing meditation, and nurturing relationships to mitigate detrimental stress, ensuring psychological balance and preventing burnout.

Research featured in the American Journal of Cardiology indicates that individuals who face moderate, managed stress typically showcase stronger hearts and reduced risk of cardiovascular illness, contrasting with those leading inactive lives free from challenges.

Dr. London’s insights remind us that total stress avoidance is impractical and unhealthy. Instead, we should strive to discern between beneficial and harmful stress, leveraging good stress as a mechanism for growth.

Chronic stress stemming from relentless worry or negativity harms the heart and weakens immunity, while short-lived positive stress from goal-setting, exercise, or learning fosters heart health and emotional vigor.

In our rapidly changing world, mastering stress management stands out as a crucial strategy to fortify both heart and mind. As Dr. London aptly puts it, "Not all stress is detrimental. The right type can genuinely shield your heart."
