Japan's PM Takaichi Receives Trump's Support Amid Rising Taiwan-China Tensions

Post by : Raina Nasser

On November 25, 2025, Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi shared insights about a supportive conversation with former U.S. President Donald Trump during their initial phone call since a recent diplomatic clash with China. Trump assured her, “Call me anytime,” providing reassurance to Japan as regional tensions escalate.

The discussion followed Takaichi's earlier comments in the Japanese parliament where she indicated that a hypothetical attack by China on Taiwan could elicit a military response from Japan. This assertion prompted a strong backlash from Beijing, which views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not dismissed the idea of forcefully reclaiming it. China reacted vigorously, even implementing travel restrictions against Japan.

Taiwan, situated merely 100 kilometers from Japan, firmly disputes China's claims and maintains that only its citizens can determine their future. The precarious environment has placed Japan, a pivotal ally of the U.S., in a challenging position amidst rising regional confrontations.

Following their call, Takaichi told reporters that Trump reiterated their solid friendship and urged her to reach out as needed. During their exchange, Trump also briefed Takaichi on U.S.-China relations and his recent dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi allegedly conveyed to Trump that Taiwan’s “return to China” is essential to China’s global vision. However, Trump has remained silent regarding Taiwan in his remarks about discussions with Xi.

The U.S. government has not provided any comments regarding the conversation between Trump and Takaichi. The Japanese government continues to emphasize the importance of maintaining stable relations with both the U.S. and China, aware that peaceful relations are crucial for regional and global stability.

In response to China's increasing assertiveness, Japan has stepped up its military capabilities in recent years, with assistance from the U.S. Recently, Tokyo announced plans for deploying a medium-range missile unit to Yonaguni Island, located close to Taiwan, an action Beijing criticized as provocative, further intensifying tensions. Additionally, Japan deployed fighter jets after identifying a Chinese drone near Yonaguni.

Despite ongoing tensions, Japan remains open to dialogue with China to mitigate conflict. Recently, Japan's vice foreign minister convened with China's ambassador in Tokyo to discuss various ongoing matters. However, China's response to a potential meeting between Takaichi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang during the latest G20 summit was a firm rejection.

Since assuming office last month, Takaichi is perceived as a staunch nationalist with significant public support in Japan. Her resolute stance regarding Taiwan-China relations could portend extended challenges within Japan-China ties.

Concerns linger in Japan regarding Trump’s stance on Taiwan. Some officials harbor fears that Trump may prioritize trade deals with China at the expense of Taiwan’s security. Experts caution that such tendencies could embolden China to adopt a more aggressive posture in the region.

Japan remains attentive to the evolving circumstances, balancing its alliance with the U.S. alongside its complex relationship with China, all while advocating for Taiwan's right to self-determination.

This unfolding diplomatic narrative underscores the delicate and intricate dynamics in East Asia, where influential nations and regional stakeholders navigate the realms of security, diplomacy, and economic interests.
