New Fisheries Policy in Abu Dhabi Aims to Ensure Sustainability

In a significant move, Abu Dhabi has introduced a forward-thinking Sustainable Fisheries Policy, solidifying its dedication to the health of marine resources. The initiative, launched under Decree No. (8) of 2025 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, signals a crucial step in balancing economic interests with ecological conservation.

This policy is designed to ensure the sustained availability of fish stocks, augment economic and social advantages, and promote research and innovation in managing fisheries. It reflects positive outcomes in the recovery of fish stocks due to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi's (EAD) regulatory frameworks that seek to intertwine ecological stability with the fishing community's livelihood.

Central to the policy’s goals are initiatives for scientific fisheries management, improved monitoring systems, advancement of fishing laws, and the promotion of sustainable aquaculture practices. Additionally, the framework prioritizes the restoration of crucial natural habitats, including coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems, fortifying local biodiversity against environmental pressures.

The policy also empowers local fishermen by advocating responsible fishing methods and enhancing awareness regarding the prudent use of ocean resources. Abu Dhabi’s strategy is aimed at preserving indigenous species from the impacts of overfishing and ensuring a diverse, balanced marine ecosystem that contributes to food security and economic resilience.

Through a blend of regulatory vigilance, community involvement, and ecological responsibility, Abu Dhabi’s Sustainable Fisheries Policy establishes a robust framework intended to safeguard the emirate’s aquatic legacy for the future.
