Tom Steyer's Unprecedented $195 Million Ad Campaign in California

Tom Steyer's Unprecedented $195 Million Ad Campaign in California

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Billionaire and Democratic candidate Tom Steyer has initiated what is set to be the most costly political ad campaign in the history of the United States as he strives to secure the position of California’s governor.

As reported by AdImpact, Steyer has either spent or reserved upwards of $195 million on advertisements across various platforms including television, cable, radio, and digital media. This figure continues to grow as the primary election date of June 2 approaches.

A former hedge fund manager and prominent liberal figure, Steyer is heavily financing his campaign with personal funds, contributing over 20 times the amount of his nearest Democratic opponent, Xavier Becerra.

No other candidate nationally has come close to matching Steyer’s spending. In Georgia, Republican Rick Jackson has allocated around $83 million for his gubernatorial ads, while Lt. Gov. Burt Jones has put forth nearly $31 million.

Steyer’s substantial financial outlay has invited criticism from his competitors, accusing him of attempting to “purchase” the governor’s office. Ex-U.S. House member Katie Porter has openly criticized his deep-pocketed approach during the campaign, emphasizing her own strategy does not involve hundreds of millions to secure a position.

His extravagant expenditure has shattered records previously held in California politics. In 2010, Republican Meg Whitman spent $178.5 million in her unsuccessful gubernatorial bid, then deemed the most expensive statewide campaign.

Regardless of the extensive funding, Steyer has not established a commanding lead in the contest. Current polls reveal a close race featuring several frontrunners, including Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton.

Steyer’s financial prowess has facilitated a persistent presence on various advertising platforms including television, radio, YouTube, Instagram, and more. Reports suggest that his campaign paid a Texas social media influencer $100,000 to advocate for him online.

In contrast, Becerra has opted for more modest advertising efforts, focusing on combating voter fatigue stemming from Steyer’s relentless ads. One notable campaign ad encouraged voters to “end the continuous Tom Steyer ads” by rallying behind Becerra.

California’s gubernatorial race features over 50 candidates on a single ballot under the state’s “top two” primary system, where the two candidates who receive the most votes will progress to the November election, independent of party affiliation.

Political analysts suggest that Steyer’s spending could influence the race’s final outcome in this tightly contested scenario. Democratic strategist Andrew Acosta noted that every edge counts in competitive elections.

However, historical trends indicate that hefty campaign financing does not guarantee success. Billionaire Rick Caruso spent over $100 million in the 2022 Los Angeles mayoral race but ultimately lost to Karen Bass. Similarly, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg invested over $1 billion in his 2020 presidential campaign before exiting early.

Steyer’s own 2020 presidential ambition also failed to gain traction despite substantial spending.

The California governor race unfolds amid pressing concerns for voters, such as homelessness, soaring housing costs, wildfire insurance dilemmas, state budget issues, and increasing expenses for essentials like groceries, fuel, and utilities.

Having never held elected office, Steyer addressed his spending in an earlier interview, asserting he would never apologize for his business success and claimed that money isn’t the sole factor in winning elections.
