Singapore has called upon North Korea to keep engaging in regional diplomatic forums and maintain open lines of communication as geopolitical tensions escalate across Asia. This appeal came from Singapore's Foreign Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, during his recent visit to North Korea.
Meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui in Pyongyang on May 26, Balakrishnan's discussions were part of a larger diplomatic mission across Northeast Asia, which also includes visits to China and South Korea. The two foreign ministers exchanged views on pressing regional security matters and international issues affecting the Asia-Pacific.
According to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Balakrishnan urged North Korea to take an active role in the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), a platform pivotal for diplomatic conversations about security in the Asia-Pacific, in which North Korea has participated since 2000.
Following the meeting, Balakrishnan characterized their discussions as open and constructive, stressing the significance of maintaining communication and collaboration during this period fraught with uncertainty and instability.
The foreign ministers reaffirmed their longstanding diplomatic ties, with Singapore and North Korea celebrating 50 years of relations in 2025. Singapore officials have characterized this relationship as friendly, grounded in mutual respect and continuous engagement.
During his visit, Balakrishnan was treated to an official banquet and held talks with Jo Yong Won, chairman of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly. The meeting recalled the historic visit of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Singapore for the summit with then-US President Donald Trump in 2018.
This diplomatic effort occurs at a crucial moment on the Korean Peninsula, following recent North Korean missile tests that have raised new international security concerns. Regional authorities are keeping a close watch on developments amidst the continuing tensions related to North Korea’s weapons program.
Balakrishnan’s North Korea visit came after discussions in Beijing with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where they addressed Middle Eastern tensions and highlighted the need for stability and secure international trade routes, including through the Strait of Hormuz.
Analysts suggest that Singapore’s diplomatic outreach is indicative of broader regional strategies aimed at sustaining engagement with Pyongyang, despite the escalating geopolitical uncertainty. Maintaining platforms for dialogue, such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, is seen as critical in reducing misunderstandings and fostering long-term stability in the region.
