In a startling incident on Thursday morning, nine men suffered injuries when a suspected migrant smuggling operation culminated in a crash close to Kampung Sungai Rual in Jeli, Kelantan. Officials reported that three individuals sustained serious injuries; among them was a Malaysian man alleged to be involved in the illicit transport of undocumented migrants.
The event unfolded around 7:30 a.m. on Jalan Bukit Cermin, after a General Operations Force (GOF) patrol team flagged a suspicious Proton Saga on the East-West Highway. Authorities suspected the vehicle was carrying undocumented foreign nationals.
According to Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain, commander of the Southeast Brigade General Operations Force, the driver attempted to evade authorities upon realizing the vehicle was being followed. The car sped away in an effort to escape, leading to a high-speed pursuit by GOF personnel.
During the chase, the vehicle lost control near Kampung Sungai Rual, crashing into a roadside embankment. Emergency responders along with police teams were dispatched promptly to the accident site to assist the injured and secure the vicinity.
Authorities apprehended the 21-year-old Malaysian driver and eight Bangladeshi men, ages 20 to 40. All injured parties were taken to Jeli Hospital for treatment, while several suspects were transported to the district police headquarters for further inquiry.
Investigators reportedly uncovered 10 yaba pills believed to be methamphetamine during a search of the vehicle. Authorities are now delving into whether the incident is connected to broader criminal activities involving migrant trafficking and illegal drug possession.
Officials stated that this operation underscores the ongoing enforcement measures against cross-border migrant smuggling networks in the area. Law enforcement continues to enhance their patrols and surveillance along routes frequently utilized for illegal transportation activities near Malaysia’s northern borders.
The inquiry is currently being conducted under migrant smuggling and narcotics-related laws, with police considering further arrests as the investigation into the wider network linked to the case advances.
