In a recent announcement, Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, provided an encouraging update on Lionel Messi's fitness amid rising concerns regarding the football icon's injury as the FIFA World Cup approaches. Scaloni reassured fans that initial assessments indicate Messi's condition is "not that bad" and expressed hope that forthcoming medical evaluations will affirm this positive outlook.
Messi experienced muscle fatigue in his left hamstring during Inter Miami's intense 6-4 triumph over Philadelphia in Major League Soccer. The Argentine star exited the match in the 73rd minute, prompting worries about his availability just a few weeks prior to the World Cup.
Although he is now 38 years old, Messi continues to play a pivotal role in Argentina's squad as the defending champions attempt to reclaim the title they secured in Qatar four years ago.
In an interview with Argentine television outlet DSports, Scaloni acknowledged that while the coaching team would prefer to avoid any injury complications, the current situation is manageable. He noted that further tests in the days ahead will yield a clearer picture of Messi's physical state.
Scaloni recounted that he viewed the Inter Miami match from the Argentine Football Association headquarters and felt relief when Messi asked to leave the pitch rather than risk further injury. Inter Miami's coach, Guillermo Hoyos, later stated that the challenging pitch conditions and muscle fatigue influenced that decision.
The club has confirmed that Messi's full return to training will depend on his rehabilitation and medical assessments, although no specific timeline for his comeback or World Cup readiness was provided.
Argentina's FIFA World Cup journey kicks off on June 16, as they take on Algeria in Kansas City. The squad is also set to compete against Austria on June 22 and Jordan on June 28 in the group stage.
Ahead of the World Cup, Argentina will participate in two friendlies in the United States against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9, crucial for evaluating player readiness and final strategy.
Though Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation in the 2026 World Cup, analysts widely anticipate his return, which would mark his sixth World Cup appearance, a record that could also see Cristiano Ronaldo and Guillermo Ochoa reach the same milestone.
