The Singapore Consumer Product Safety Office (CPSO) has issued a dire warning to all parents and caregivers, urging them to stop using self-feeding baby pillows immediately. This sharp advisory stems from serious concerns regarding infant choking and suffocation risks associated with these products, which allow babies to feed from bottles without direct supervision.
Health officials noted that infants do not possess the necessary physical capabilities or awareness to handle feeding independently. They cannot manage the milk flow, identify when to pause, or respond adequately in case of choking or gagging, significantly heightening the potential for life-threatening situations.
Furthermore, the design of these feeding pillows could inadvertently lead to suffocation if a baby's position shifts. There are also concerns over other health issues, such as lung infections and ear infections resulting from improper feeding positions.
This warning mirrors similar alerts from child safety organizations in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, where experts have cautioned against the use of devices that prop bottles. Pediatric professionals strongly advocate that infants should always be fed with direct adult oversight.
Caregivers are advised against propping up feeding bottles with pillows, blankets, or other supportive materials marketed as safe. Instead, infants should be held or placed in semi-upright positions during feeding for ongoing supervision.
This advisory reflects the growing global focus on any infant care product's safety, reiterating that convenience must never compromise a child's well-being.
