Massive Winter Storm Strikes Eastern US, Causes Widespread Disruptions

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Washington, US: A powerful winter storm is currently moving across the eastern regions of the United States, impacting close to 1 million residents by cutting off electricity and resulting in the cancellation of more than 10,000 flights. This storm is characterized by heavy snowfall, icy rain, and dangerously low temperatures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has indicated that hazardous conditions and sub-zero temperatures may persist for several days, creating "serious travel and infrastructure challenges." States that have been most severely affected include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.

According to PowerOutage.us, over 850,000 customers are facing power outages, particularly 290,000 in Tennessee and over 100,000 each in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana.

Meteorologist Allison Santorelli described the storm as "remarkable" due to its extensive reach, with nearly 213 million people affected along a 2,000-mile stretch from New Mexico and Texas to New England.

Setting a historical precedent, US President Donald Trump has authorized federal emergency disaster declarations. Nearly 20 states along with the District of Columbia have recognized weather emergencies. Trump has urged citizens to "stay safe and warm."

This winter storm has led to significant travel disruption, with major airlines warning passengers about cancellations and delays. FEMA has taken proactive measures by preparing supplies and deploying search-and-rescue teams in several states. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has encouraged residents to stock up on fuel and food while taking necessary precautions.

The NWS has warned that significant ice accumulation may lead to prolonged power outages, substantial tree damage, and extremely hazardous travel conditions, even in regions unaccustomed to severe winter weather.
