Sharjah is making significant progress in advocating for restorative justice and community reconciliation. A key dialogue session titled “Dispute Resolution in Sharjah: New Horizons for Amicable Solutions and Sustainable Justice” took place at the Expo Centre Sharjah on Wednesday evening, part of the 2025 Sharjah International Book Fair. This gathering included judicial leaders, law enforcement, and experts, focusing on effective strategies for addressing disputes before they escalate into legal matters.
His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Judicial Council, underscored the essential role of reconciliation in fostering social unity. He pointed out that resolving conflicts proactively enhances family stability, promotes tolerance, and secures community harmony. His Highness referenced the “Direct Line” initiative, encouraging programs that enhance public understanding of peaceful conflict resolution and the avoidance of litigation when possible.
Judicial leaders provided insights into the expanding framework for restorative justice in Sharjah. Judge Dr Mohammed Obaid Al Kaabi, leading the Judicial Department, detailed reforms aimed at achieving a balance between justice and reconciliation. Key initiatives include the Alimony Fund, designed to assist with family disputes, and parental agreements to clarify ethical responsibilities within households. These strategies seek to offer structured, non-litigious resolutions while reinforcing societal values.
Counselor Dr Salah Al Hammadi, leading the Prosecution, highlighted the significance of mediation and programs focused on family reconciliation. By providing online complaint waivers and promoting early conflict resolution, the Public Prosecution seeks to alleviate court burdens while ensuring just outcomes for all involved. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s announcement of 2026 as the Year of the Family, reflecting leadership’s commitment to family welfare and societal harmony.
Brigadier Dr Mohammed Khamis Al Othmani, Director of the Sharjah Police Sciences Academy, emphasized that community policing is fundamental to Sharjah’s restorative justice approach. Adopting the motto “Reconciliation before Litigation,” he expressed the role of trained mediators in resolving disputes, strengthening family ties, and collaborating with government and charitable organizations to maintain a secure and inclusive society.
International perspectives were included in the discussion, with Dr Emad El-Din Hussein sharing insights on global advancements in mediation strategies. His contributions highlighted the economic and social advantages of reconciliation, showcasing restorative justice as a viable approach to enhancing community stability.
The session wrapped up with His Highness receiving accolades and publications from legal practitioners, illustrating the emirate’s dedication to knowledge-sharing and progressive improvement in judicial practices.
Sharjah's comprehensive initiatives across judicial, law enforcement, and community sectors exemplify an advanced model of restorative justice—prioritizing understanding, reconciliation, and community harmony preservation.
