The closure of pig farms in Tanjong Sepat, Selangor, is in its concluding phase, with around 11,000 pigs left to be moved before the shutdown is finalized. Authorities have reported that about 30 farms are temporarily still active as part of a phased process mandated by the state government's earlier directives.
Datuk Izham Hashim, the Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Executive Councillor, indicated that the phased closure has been ongoing since February. This was due to some livestock being not fully mature for disposal when the initial eviction order was given. During this final stage, officials have stated that no new piglets are allowed on the farms.
The state government has announced that all remaining animals will gradually be moved to the slaughterhouse in Rawang. Authorities anticipate completing the closure soon, ahead of stricter enforcement measures that will take effect in July.
Discussions regarding the transition plan have involved Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin. The government's focus now shifts to transforming the formerly pig-farming area, spanning 141.6 hectares, into alternative high-value agricultural ventures.
Additionally, a special meeting set for June 9 will assess federal and state support measures for the affected operators. Reported initiatives aim to aid 87 farm operators transition into other agricultural sectors or economic activities through land restoration programs.
Previous updates indicated that all pig farms in Tanjong Sepat should completely stop operations by the end of June. Enforcement actions are planned to commence on July 1, following a six-month grace period provided to operators for winding down business and liquidating remaining livestock.
This closure aligns with a royal decree from the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, who has consistently opposed pig farming throughout the state. This directive has significantly influenced the livestock industry's structure in the region.
Officials stress that the transition process is being managed with care to ensure a balance among agricultural restructuring, economic viability, and social implications for affected workers and business owners. Long-term development plans for the area are projected to pivot towards sustainable and diversified agricultural practices.
