The winners of the Saudi Fabric of the Future competition were revealed on Tuesday in Riyadh, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Fashion Commission, Collateral Good, IE University, Misk City, Entrepreneurs’ Community by Misk, and Proaltus Capital Partners. This competition emphasized sustainability, innovation, and investment in the Kingdom’s fashion and textile industries.
The forum served as a meeting point for policymakers, investors, scholars, brands, and entrepreneurs to delve into the future of textile innovation in Saudi Arabia. Attendees engaged in discussions on sustainable materials, cutting-edge textile technologies, climate-positive supply chains, and the significance of investments in fostering innovative solutions.
An exciting aspect of the event was the presentation of garments crafted from Red Sea seaweed. This groundbreaking fabric is a product of collaboration between the Fashion Commission, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and PYRATEX, symbolizing the Kingdom’s dedication to eco-conscious fashion through scientific research and advanced sustainable manufacturing processes for fully traceable fibers.
The event also featured a startup pitch competition that acknowledged creativity and innovation in the fashion realm. Three startups were honored in various categories: Sci-Lume Labs clinched the title for Best Sustainable Innovation, Texula earned the award for Best Business Model, and Faircraft was recognized for Best Pitch.
Every winning startup will receive an extensive growth package, which includes participation in an Immersion Day at HUGO BOSS Headquarters in Metzingen, strategic mentorship from IE University’s Fashion Department and Entrepreneurship Centre, and partial scholarships for master’s programs. They will also engage in one-on-one mentoring sessions with Collateral Good covering topics such as IP, scaling, fundraising, and business development. Furthermore, they will gain exclusive membership in the Entrepreneurs’ Community by Misk, granting access to mentorship, investors, media exposure, and tailored business assistance, including potential funding avenues.
Burak Cakmak, CEO of the Fashion Commission, highlighted the Kingdom’s objective to establish itself as a center for sustainable fashion innovation. “We aim to connect local talent with international startups, investors, and industry stakeholders. By merging diverse ideas and expertise, our goal is to develop a competitive and sustainable fashion ecosystem,” he stated.
Michael Kleindl, Founder and Managing Partner at Collateral Good, commended Saudi Arabia’s dedication to circular fashion and sustainability. He remarked, “The Kingdom’s dynamic environment and commitment to a circular textile system are truly impressive. Today’s event marks a promising beginning for our collaboration with Saudi Arabia.”
Through this forum, the Fashion Commission reaffirms its commitment to fostering a sustainable and innovation-oriented fashion sector. The event included keynote speeches, roundtable discussions, and networking opportunities, paving the way for local talent to collaborate with global experts. By utilizing Misk City as a creative and entrepreneurial hub, the commission is propelling innovators to craft a sustainable, forward-thinking fashion ecosystem across both nonprofit and private sectors.
